What is the difference between resin bound and resin bonded driveways?

Resin bound and resin bonded driveways are not the same system. Resin bound mixes the aggregate fully through the resin before it is trowelled flat, creating a smooth, seamless finish with no loose stone. Resin bonded spreads a resin adhesive over the base and scatters aggregate onto it, leaving a more textured, gravel-like surface. The right choice depends on the finish you want, the condition of the base and whether the whole build-up is designed for drainage.

How resin bound is made

A resin bound surface mixes graded natural aggregate fully through a clear UV-stable resin and trowels the blend to a smooth, close-textured finish over a properly prepared sub-base or a sound existing concrete or tarmac base. Every stone is coated and held in the mix, so there is no loose aggregate on top to migrate or sweep away.

How resin bonded is made

A resin bonded surface works in the opposite order: resin adhesive is spread over the prepared base, then aggregate is broadcast and rolled onto it. Only the underside of each stone is bonded, so the finished surface keeps a more textured, gravel-like appearance and feel underfoot. It is generally specified as a resurfacing system over a genuinely sound and level base.

Drainage depends on the build-up, not the label

A resin bound driveway can be part of a permeable, SuDS-style build-up when the surface and sub-base are designed to let water drain through. Resin bound over an impermeable base is not permeable. Resin bonded surfacing is not normally the choice for a permeable build-up, so anyone comparing the two should ask how the whole driveway will manage surface water rather than assuming the resin layer alone answers that question.

Choosing between them

Resin bound suits a seamless, low-maintenance finish for front-garden conversions and curved driveways. Resin bonded suits larger areas, verges and pathways being resurfaced over a sound base when a textured, gravel-like look is preferred. Neither surface can make up for a failed sub-base: visible sinking, heaving or structural cracking needs the underlying ground problem assessed before a new finish is chosen.

  1. Is the existing base sound and level enough to resurface, or does it need rebuilding?
  2. Do you want a smooth, seamless finish or a more textured, gravel-like appearance?
  3. How will the finished driveway deal with rainwater — including the sub-base, not just the top layer?

Is resin bound always permeable?
No. Resin bound can form part of a permeable driveway when it is installed over a sub-base designed for drainage. The same resin-bound surface installed over an impermeable base will not be permeable, so the full build-up matters.
Does resin bonded have loose stones?
Resin bonded surfacing holds aggregate on a resin adhesive layer, rather than mixing it fully through the resin. It is intended to keep a textured, natural stone surface rather than the smooth finish of resin bound.
Can either system go over an old driveway?
